BLEND INFORMATION
*Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)
USES/BENEFITS: A warming and toning herb that is useful in viral infections, and helps to reduce infections of the upper respiratory tract.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: May cause fatigue, low blood pressure, or headache; do not take astragalus if suffering from skin disorders, or during acute illness.
*Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza spp.)
USES/BENEFITS: A cooling herb that gives relief from irritation and inflammation associated with respiratory ailments; has antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Excessive doses may cause serious side effects,such as high blood pressure; use caution during pregnancy; may interact with medications such as metformin, diuretics, insulin, anticoagulants, cyclosporine, and MAO-inhibitors.
*Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis)
USES/BENEFITS: Soothes and protects the mucous membranes; its demulcent properties make it useful in bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, dry coughs, and pleurisy.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Take a few hours away from most medications; can interact with lithium and diabetic medications; use caution or avoid in pregnancy and during breastfeeding.
*Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)
USES/BENEFITS: A warming herb known for its affinity to the lungs; may be used to reduce mucus formation; a good expectorant for coughs, and other chest problems; treats lung ailments such as tracheitis and bronchitis.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Patients with hepatitis, jaundice, or other liver diseases should avoid using mullein; those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, and children under 12 years old should avoid using mullein.
*Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
USES/BENEFITS: A cooling herb that aids in chest congestion; it is an analgesic, and an antimicrobial; relieves pain, and reduces sensitivity.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Children under five years of age should not take peppermint; patients with known or suspected hiatal hernia or gastroesophageal reflux should avoid peppermint; may interact with medications such as cyclosporine.
