BLEND INFORMATION
*Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)
USES/BENEFITS: A warming and toning herb useful in viral infections; helps to reduce infections of the upper respiratory tract.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: May cause fatigue, low blood pressure, or headache; do not take astragalus if suffering from skin disorders, or during acute illness.
*Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
USES/BENEFITS: Chamomile is a relaxant herb; it is a strong antispasmodic that eases tense muscles; reduces irritability and congestion; anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Those allergic to ragweed, mugwort pollen, or members of the Compositae family (such as chrysanthemums) should likely avoid this herb; take only on professional advice if using blood-thinning medication; may interact with medications such as cyclosporine, sedatives, anticoagulants, and cytochrome P450 substrates.
*Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara)
USES/BENEFITS: A warming herb, known for its demulcent and expectorant properties; used as treatment for spasmodic coughs.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: It is advised to not take for longer than 3-4 weeks at a time; do not take during pregnancy or while breastfeeding; coltsfoot is not suitable for children under six years of age.
*Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea)
USES/BENEFITS: A cooling herb, useful for sore throats, coughs and bronchitis; enhances the immune system, decreasing chance of illness; antibacterial and antiviral properties.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Can cause allergic reactions in rare cases; patients undergoing chemotherapy should use caution with echinacea (can reduce efficacy of some anticancer medications); patients with allergies and asthma should use caution when using echinacea; avoid use if undergoing eyelid surgery due to added risk of dry eye syndrome.
*Elderberries (Sambucus nigra)
USES/BENEFITS: An herb with antiviral properties that prevents and encourages speedy recovery from upper respiratory infections, such as colds and flus; may enhance immune function.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Avoid use in pregnancy and while breastfeeding; may interact with antidiabetics, diuretics, and laxatives.
*Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)
USES/BENEFITS: A warming herb known for its affinity to the lungs; may be used to reduce mucus formation; a good expectorant for coughs, and other chest problems; treats lung ailments such as tracheitis and bronchitis.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Patients with hepatitis, jaundice, or other liver diseases should avoid using mullein; those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, and children under 12 years old should avoid using mullein.
