*Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
USES/BENEFITS: Ashwagandha contains iron, and is a hot adaptogenic herb, known to relieve stress, tension, and anxiety; it can help to lower cortisol levels, thus reducing the stress response. It can also reduce inflammation, reduce the risk of cancer, improve memory, improve immune function, and contains anti-aging properties.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: May increase testosterone levels, and should be avoided by those with hormone-sensitive prostate cancer; those taking benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants, and barbiturates should likely avoid this herb, as it can have sedative effects; pregnant women should avoid ashwagandha as it may induce abortion at very high doses.
*Eleuthero/Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)
USES/BENEFITS: Eleuthero is a warm adaptogenic herb known for reducing fatigue; it helps to combat stress, improves energy, and supports brain function; a great tonic for the adrenal glands (helps the body to withstand heat, cold, infection, and other physical stresses); can be helpful in treating chronic fatigue.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Consult a medical professional for use after six weeks; avoid caffeine when taking eleuthero; may interact with medications such as digoxins and cytochrome P450 substrates.
*Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)
USES/BENEFITS: High in magnesium and potassium, holy basil is a warm adaptogenic herb known to improve energy and vitality; may increase metabolism,reduce stress, normalize energy levels, reduce anxiety, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Do not take in pregnancy, or if trying to conceive.
*Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza spp.)
USES/BENEFITS: Licorice is a cold herb that is known to stimulate production of adrenal gland hormones, and reduce the breakdown of steroids by the liver and kidneys; useful in inflammatory stomach conditions; the isoflavones present in licorice are known to be estrogenic, which can treat menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Excessive doses may cause serious side effects,such as high blood pressure; use caution during pregnancy; may interact with medications such as metformin, diuretics, insulin, anticoagulants, cyclosporine, and antihypertensives.
*Nettle (Urtica dioica)
USES/BENEFITS: Nettles are highly nutritious, containing excellent sources of vitamins K, B2, A, B6, B9, Choline and B3, and minerals like calcium, manganese, potassium, iron, copper, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus; nettles have traditionally been used as a cleansing and detoxifying herb; can help with recovery from prolonged stress and adrenal fatigue.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: May interact with medications such as anticoagulants, BP drugs, diuretics, diabetics, lithium, and NSAID's.
